• Summary:Founded as a launch team in 2008 and established on Easter 2009 by Pastor Steve and Cathy Smith, the congregation merged with Pembroke Manor Christian Church in January 2017 to become SonRise @ Pembroke Manor and now meets in a building that dates to the 1960s; founding pastor Steve Smith is a retired Virginia Beach Police Department captain. The church affirms biblical inerrancy and a conservative statement on marriage, gender, and sexuality, names its pastor and council of elders as the final interpretive authority on Scripture, practices believer’s baptism by full immersion, and offers a New Members class taught by Pastor Steve. Family ministries are a focus: children’s programs serve birth through 5th grade with screened volunteers and snacks, youth ministry serves grades 6–12 on Sunday evenings with thorough leader screening and training, and small groups run in three 12-week semesters (8–15 people, meeting in homes or at SonRise).
