• Summary:Founded in 1982 as a racially, culturally and economically mixed neighborhood congregation rooted in the Beatitudes and the Church of the Saviour tradition, New Community Church describes itself as a "recovery and resurrection" church committed to neighborhood ministry and mutual support. While the church building on 614 S Street NW is under renovation, Sunday worship meets at 11:00 a.m. in the Historic Whitelaw Ballroom (1839 13th St. NW) in Shaw near Howard University, and the congregation is partnering with Manna, Inc. on the S St. Village affordable housing and renovated church space. The community follows an ecumenical lectionary, offers children’s inter-generational Sunday school during the sermon, and carries out much of its work through Mission Groups—examples include a virtual Nooma group on Friday mornings, a Resurrection & Recovery open support group on Wednesdays, weekly AA/NA meetings, ArtSpace open studios the first Sunday of each month, and the New Community For Children after-school and summer programs.
